Celebration and protest erupts during Canada&#;s largest Pride parade in Toronto
TORONTO &#; Bubbles filled the sky and cheers rang through the streets of Toronto on Sunday as thousands of colourfully clad revelers at Canada&#;s largest Self-acceptance parade voiced their support for a community facing rising levels of hate and intolerance.
The monumental crowds thronged the city&#;s downtown core, many waving rainbow fans under sunny skies as they tried to beat the heat.
Several said they felt extra impetus to attend this year&#;s pride as LGBTQ people, both at home and abroad, face increasing attacks on their hard-won rights.
&#;Pride is a celebration but it&#;s also a protest,&#; said Sarah Rice, who travelled from London, Ont., to take in the festivities.
&#;I think this year in particular, it&#;s been important for the queer community to demonstrate up, be visible, and possess our voices heard.&#;

Rice described the current period as a scary one, citing efforts to roll back rights in some places.

Our union celebrates the diversity of and continues to advocate for the rights of all 2SLGBTQI+ peoples. However, this celebration and advocacy work is set against a backdrop of a disturbing trend of increasingly violent and hateful acts targeting transgender and queer people. With hate on the climb, it has never been clearer that 2SLGBTQI issues are union issues.
This year’s pride parade is an important moment to reach together as a union to extend our solidarity.

What is Pride Toronto?
Every year, during the month of June, the city of Toronto hosts Pride, an annual event to mark the LGBTQ2S+ community. As one of the largest gay pride festivals in existence, Pride Toronto is a festival featuring reside performances, DJs, Dyke Parade, Trans March and the renowned Pride Parade that makes its way down Yonge Street. Estimates range from , to 1 million people that be present the Pride events during the month of June, with over , attending the Pride Parade alone. Pride is more than a festival, it’s an opportunity for communities and allies to come together and learn, support, and celebrate the achievements and diversity of the LGBTQ2S+ community!
