Ethan Regal tells his personal story of living in Nigeria as a gay man:

When I was a young male child in Lagos, Nigeria, I had a mysterious, unexplainable tingling sensation whenever I saw an attractive guy. The stories I heard regarding romance involved a boy and girl. So I thought to myself: maybe I’m a teen deep down. That seemed like the only explanation for my attraction.

I kept thinking that may be God made a mistake. Perhaps I was meant to be a teen. I never had issues with my body. I wasn’t interested in getting rid of my penis or growing breasts. I just thought that in order to be with a boy I contain to be a girl.

Gay people in Nigeria were invisible &#; constantly hiding. We never had TV series or movies with gay characters so I was confused. All I knew was that people discussed homosexuality with so much disgust.

I work at a British retail chain that has recently put preferred pronouns on our name badges. I&#;m a he/him but at least one of our workers is a they/them. They&#;re working the checkout when a customer notices this on their name tag.

Customer: &#;Oh for f*** sake! Even this place isn&#;t safe! I thought [British retail chain] was one of the last remaining sensible ones!&#;

Coworker: &#;What are you referring to?&#;

Customer: &#;This whole they, them, it, pronoun b****cks! There are men, and there are women. That&#;s it! I&#;m so weary of your generation crying because you got—&#; *Air quotes.* &#;—&#;misgendered&#;! Bunch of big babies!&#;
