HAVANA TIMES — Luis, why didn’t you call on Little Havana in Miami instead of coming directly to Fort Lauderdale?, “Well, I’m going to give you a simple answer to that question: because I’ve had more than enough of the version in my own territory. Plus, I’m not in a position where I can spend extra cash traveling to obtain there, and much less in a position to maltreatment the hospitality my hosts in Florida are showing me, I told an acquaintance who lives in Hialeah.
I must admit that it’s true what my colleague Erasmo said a while ago in one of his articles for Havana Times about how “nice people are in the US.” During the four days I spent in Fort Lauderdale, even though my hosts were in the process of moving home, I can’t whine about their outstanding attention. In my naivety, I’ll state that I was lucky to be surrounded by such highly-educated people, not at all vulgar, who have a culture of looking after the ecosystem that surrounds them to the utmost, looking after plants, animals and cleaning with the utmost care.

Just as members of the LGBTQ community, at any age, must give more thought than non-LGBTQ people about where to dwell abroad, the same applies to retiring domestically. Though most legal protections, such as marriage equality and laws forbidding job and housing discrimination, have been federalized, some states led the way early on.
Note that the LGBTQ population of all the recommended states below exceeds 5%, though not all articulate surveys are as up-to-date as the Gallup poll, which showed LGBTQ identification in the U.S. at %. According to the same Gallup survey, the LGBTQ cohort in Gen X — born from to , that’s the group nearing retirement — clocks in at %.
Of course, some cities, towns, and neighborhoods have a proud history of lgbtq+ liberation, acceptance, and guard. Still, LGBTQ people are increasingly visible and standard in suburban pockets and small villages to an extent that would hold been unthinkable a generation ago.
