Black Sails

I just rewatched the entire series--binge watched actually which I have never done with anything. For those that had trouble getting past the first season or certain aspects, I cannot suggest strong enough that you seek again, just settle back, watch, and enjoy. With each episode and season, the story gets significantly bigger and deeper as initially shallow seeming reasons are revealed to have justifiable assist stories. Once through the first season, the web of intrigue grows. Everyone and thing becomes more interconnected, and though a not many characters drive everyone's actions, each individual character no matter how small can have devastating impact.

What I liked best is that it's such an American story with British playing conduct roles, supported by all those exploited. Colonialism is nakedly exposed. It soon becomes the story of each individual's reasons for cutting ties with the old world and seeking out the new. Some it's rage or vengeance, others seeking autonomy or a chance to have the wealth or might the aristocracy refuses to share. Organism pirates, democracy plays a

“The sodomite had been a temporary aberration, the homosexual was now a species.” Writing in , Foucault posited that what we understand as the modern gay did not exist before the late Victorian period. Rather than an inherent identity that has existed across time and room, the homosexual identity emerged directly out of a discourse of repression. Foucault was not the first to suggest that sexuality emerges out of its cultural context and power relations, and his theories are far from flawless. For example, The History of Sexuality makes no consideration of how interactions with non-Western communities shaped Western ideas of gender and sexuality. However, his work raises an important doubt. How do we contend with understanding sexuality in contexts where our contemporary identities and meanings simply do not apply? And how do we approach this problem in the specific case of historical fiction, which faces the dual task of entity true to its setting and relatable to the modern audience?

Lady Geek Girl and Friends

Back when it premiered in , I settled down excitedly to watch Starz Network’s earlys pirate drama Black Sails. I had a notion going in that it was entity marketed as Starz’s address to HBO’s Game of Thrones, and would be trying hard to fold in a comparable amount of sex, depravity, and violence. I wasn’t mistaken, but the first episode of Black Sails introduced a lesbian relationship that felt so painfully tailored to the male gaze that I actually clueless interest and stopped watching, certain that the lie down of the show would be cringeworthy. I only gave the show another shot as of a few months ago, when my partner kept asking if we could survey it together. Had it not been for them, I would have done the same thing over again, because the queer woman scenes were as terrible as I had remembered. But we slogged through episode one, and as the show went on, I was surprised to find that things turned around in the leading possible way.
