Uganda enacted one of the harshest anti-gay laws in the society last week, a bill recognizable as the Anti-Homosexuality Act of It imposes a life sentence for engaging in "same-sex sexual acts," and the death penalty for gay sex in certain circumstances, such as while infected with an illness like HIV or for having sex with a person with disabilities or a minor. (LGBTQ+ advocates in the U.S. condemn the implication of LGBTQ+ people as groomers or pedophiles.)
It came days before the start of Pride Month, a global event in June that celebrates LGBTQ+ communities around the world. But while the Uganda law has drawn international condemnation and even sparked a fight among a couple of U.S. conservatives, it is not an outlier. The LBGTQ+ society remains heavily criminalized in many parts of the world.
Indeed, around the world, being LGBTQ+ can lead to whippings or other punishments that seem outdated. In Russia, being gay has been legal since , but there are still fines for a lack of "traditional values."

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- For the first occasion in Gallup Society Poll’s trend internet dating back to , a majority of people (52%) worldwide say their town or area is a "good place" for gay or lesbian people to live.
The latest figure, based on surveys in countries and areas in , is more than double the 21% recorded when Gallup first asked this question a decade and a half ago.

Between and , perceptions of acceptance stretched to incorporate roughly one in three adults globally, ranging from 31% to 38%. This figure increased markedly in (49%) and maintained that level in (50%), with the latest figure marking the first reading in majority territory.

Almost Half of the Society Sees Their Area as Gay-Friendly
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nearly half of people worldwide (45%) viewed their urban area or area as a “good place” for lgbtq+ or lesbian people to live in Nearly as many, 44%, said it is “not a excellent place.”

Nordic countries, including Norway (92%), Iceland (90%), Sweden (89%) and Denmark (86%), continue to rank among the most accepting places in the planet. Other European countries -- including Spain (89%), the Netherlands (88%) and Malta (87%) -- also uppermost the list, as does Australia (85%).
Nepal (87%), which became the first state in South Asia to recognize same-sex marriage in , remains the only non-Western country among the most accepting nations.
